Water Week Student Planning Meeting

Students interested in getting involved with planning events and initiatives relating to water access and water quality in eastern Kentucky are invited to attend this student-led planning meeting at the Appalachian Center at 624 Maxwelton Ct. on Friday, September 13th at 6:00 pm. Pizza will be provided. ASA 2020 Program Committee Meeting

On September 12, 2019 the ASA 2020 Program Committee's subcommittees will meet at the UK Appalachian Center (624 Maxwelton Court) to discuss plans and requests for the Appalachian Studies Association Conference. If you are interested in getting involved with ASA or volunteering feel free to attend the meeting or contact Jennifer Cramer.

Appalachian Center Fall Festival

Join us for our Fall 2019 Festival at the UK Appalachian Center - 624 Maxwelton Court - on September 5, 2019 4:30-8:00PM. The Local Honeys will provide musical entertainment from 5:30-7:00PM, and Bourbon n' Toulouse BBQ & vegan BBQ will be provided. This FREE event is co-sponsored by the John Jacobs Niles Center and the UK Appalachian Center & Appalachian Studies Program and is open to all UK students, faculty, staff, and community members. We look forward to seeing you and beginning a great Fall 2019 semester!

SWAP: Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress

Join us for a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) presentation Tuesday, December 3, 2019 12-1:30PM at the UK Appalachian Center. 2019 UK Appalachian Center Eller & Billings Student Research Award recipient, Carson Benn (History), will present Appalachia on the Airwaves: A History of Public Television in the Southern Mountains. 2019 James S. Brown Student Award for Research on Appalachia recipient, Julia Miller (Sociology), will present Let's Not Do Anything Drastic!: Processes of Reproducing Rural Marginalization in Education Policy Decision-making. Lunch will be provided. This event is open to all UK students, faculty and staff. We hope to see you here at the Center!

ASA Steering Committee Reception

Join us in welcoming the Appalachian Studies Association Steering Committee to the University of Kentucky and the Appalachian Center. All who are interested in the 2020 Appalachian Studies Association Conference, which will take place at UK this coming spring semester, are welcome to attend to meet the committee, learn more about the conference, and get involved. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served.

SWAP: Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress

Join us for a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) presentation Tuesday, November 12, 2019 12-1:30PM at the UK Appalachian Center. 2019 UK Appalachian Center Eller & Billings Student Research Award recipient, Kate Love (Forestry and Natural Resource Sciences) will present Assessing the Climate Water Balance Model's Ability to Predict Soil Moisture Variability and Species Distribution at Fine Scales. 2019 James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research on Appalachia recipient, Erfan Saidi Moqadam (Anthropology) will present Reconstituting Religious Identity: Multivocal Religiosity in the Appalachian Iranian Diaspora. This is a catered event open to all UK students, faculty, and staff. We hope to see you here at the Center!

Appalachian Forum - William Isom

As part of the "Appalachian Forum" series, the UK Appalachian Center will host a film screening and discussion with filmmaker, William Isom, Director of the "Black in Appalachia" project. Isom will be screening "Knoxville's Red Summer: Riot of 1919" on Monday, October 28, 2019 at 5:00 pm. The screening will be held at the William T. Young Library UKAA Auditorium. There will be a reception open to all UK students, faculty, staff and open to the community with free food to follow the event at the UK Appalachian Center - 624 Maxwelton Court. 

This programming is presented with support from the UK Office of Institutional Diversity Inclusive Excellence Student Program Grant.

Conversations with Gurney featuring Crystal Wilkinson

Join us for our second Conversations with Gurney event of the semester featuring University of Kentucky associate professor and award winning writer, Crystal Wilkinson, on Monday, November 11th at 5PM in the CM Gatton College of Business Woodward Hall Room 307.
