UK Special Collections will celebrate the career of Appalachia scholar and historian Ron D. Eller with the donation ceremony of the Ron Eller Papers Nov. 8.

Appalachian Film Showcase Coming to UK

On Monday, Nov. 11, in the Whitehall Classroom Building, representatives from AMI’s Summer Documentary Institute will screen three self-produced documentaries.

James S. Brown 2013 Graduate Student Award

The James S. Brown Award is given to honor the memory of Professor James S. Brown, a sociologist on the faculty of the University of Kentucky from 1946 to 1982, whose pioneering studies of society, demography, and migration in Appalachia (including his ethnography of “Beech Creek”) helped to establish the field of Appalachian Studies at U.K. and beyond.

'Global Classroom' Increases Student Opportunities for International Experience

As university graduates increasingly require international perspectives, skills and knowledge, UK is using a new program called Global Classroom Connections that allows students to use new technologies to gain international experiences independent of financial or other constraints.

"Seeking the Good Life in America: Lessons from the Appalachian Past" with Ron Eller

In April of 2012, Ron Eller delivered the annual Distinguished Professor Lecture. Eller is a professor in the Department of History and has spent more than 40 years teaching and writing about the Appalachian region. His lecture was entitled “Seeking the Good Life in America: Lessons from the Appalachian Past,” and is available in this podcast in its entirety. Opening remarks were given by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Mark Kornbluh

Eller served as the director for the UK Appalachian Center for 16 years. Eller has also served as chairman of the Governor’s Kentucky Appalachian Task Force, the first chairman of the Kentucky Appalachian Commission and as a member of the Sustainable Communities Task Force of President Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development.

The University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences will present the Distinguished Professor Lecture, featuring History Professor Ron Eller at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 12 in the William T. Young Library auditorium.

Assistance to Appalachian KY communities hit by tornadoes

Here are some ways you can help:

The University of Kentucky Geographical Society is partnering with St. Vincent Mission in David, KY., to provide school supplies to students in Magoffin County. You may drop off donations at the UK Appalachian Center by March 26. A drop box for donations has also been placed in the Geography Department mailroom and will be collected through March 23rd. Donations will be delivered to St. Vincent’s Mission on March 27th.
