Thank you for reading this. It's a spin-off of my book project, an idea that didn't fit into the book and ended up on the cutting-room floor. There are two goals for this paper, first to present as a paper at the Renaissance Society of America's conference this March, and second, to submit as a paper to the journal, Social History of Alcohol and Drugs. I'll need to cut out over half of what I have here in order to shape it into a conference paper, and I'll have to refine and perhaps add to it before I can submit it to the journal. I'll welcome any suggestions you have for sharpening the ideas and the organization of what I have here - thanks again for reading it!
