The department requires a reading knowledge of a modern foreign language such as French, German, Spanish, Japanese, or Russian for all M.A. and Ph.D. students.  This requirement may be satisfied in a variety ways which are specified in the Graduate Handbook.  Many fields of study within the department, however, have more extensive requirements.  Some of these are specified in the handbook, but in some cases the requirements will be established by a student’s advisory committee.
