Southern Conference
on Slavic Studies (SCSS)

March 5-7, 2015

On behalf of the Local Arrangements Committee for both the AWSS and the SCSS, I would like to warmly invite you to beautiful Lexington, Kentucky, to experience old-fashioned Kentucky hospitality. The conference hotel (with free wifi and guest parking) is located right in the heart of downtown Lexington- within easy walking distance of many attractions.

Thursday’s welcome reception, breakfast on Friday and Saturday and all coffee breaks are all included with registration. For those arriving on Wednesday, there is an AWSS Welcome Reception at 7 PM.  For information about the reception, please contact petrone@uky.edu.

Julie Buckler is the SCSS keynote speaker at the banquet on Friday, March 6th.  She will be presenting a talk entitled “Repurposing the Past: Post-Soviet Urban Spaces.”

For the banquet on Friday evening, we are working with one of the best caterers in town to bring you a Kentucky Proud locally-accented dinner.  Wine and beer are included -- and all for the price of $55.

Now, as you may know, Lexington, Kentucky, is one of the few American cities without even a river -- so the traditional SCSS beach party on Saturday night is quite land-locked. As a result, we have arranged a program entitled Beach Blanket Bulgakov.

You are all invited to dinner and a staged reading of Bulgakov's Dreams, an original play by Herman Farrell about Bulgakov's writings in the 1920s and the staging of The Days of the Turbins. This event will take place at Natasha's Cafe and Restaurant. You can come for dinner at 6 before the play (to get a great seat) or arrive at 8 to watch the play only. We do hope you will all stay for the beach party!!!! Please RSVP to let us know how many are coming, and with whom you would like to sit!

We are also planning a couple of additional events – a bus tour on Saturday afternoon – and a bourbon tasting….Details coming soon!

For more information about the conferences, please visit the AWSS and SCSS websites.
